With participation at a two-decade high, the game of golf is slowly but surely eliminating the elitist and exclusionary stigma some held over the game for decades. And at the forefront of participation growth is the local municipal golf course where everyone is treated the same and playing the game is about having fun with friends more than posting a score or closing a deal.

GOLF.com recently published their list of the Top-30 best municipal golf courses in the country and the Arizona Alliance for Golf – the AZ golf industry’s first-ever united voice – is proud to share that Papago Golf Club was named the No. 15 best municipal golf course in the country. Papago holds a special place in Valley golfer’s hearts. Not only is it one of the best and most accessible tracks in the entire state, but it will also play future host to the Arizona Golf House, where allied associations of the Arizona Alliance for Golf will all call home. Many founding members of the AAG had an instrumental role in the securing the funds and stewarding the unique public/private partnership that led to the remodel of Papago’s new clubhouse and event pavilion.

Here’s what GOLF.com Said About Papago

No. 15 Papago Golf Club – “This beloved design, just a short drive east of Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, debuted in 1963, but the present iteration might be its best ever. Home to the highly successful Arizona State men’s and women’s golf teams since 2018 (their state-of-the-art practice facility is on-site), this parkland-style course features generous fairways, large bunkers and sprawling greens. You’ll get a close-up look at the red-colored Buttes in adjacent Papago Park from the 2nd green, while other holes point you toward the downtown skyline. Par-4s are the strength of the course, particularly the dogleg-left 6th, well-bunkered 16th and long, dogleg-right 18th.” – GOLF Magazine
