Not only do The Thunderbirds host the WM Phoenix Open; they support amateur golf too. The 2026 Thunderbird invitational is a great example. This prestigious PING Junior Masters Series tournament teed off in March for the 32nd time with Arizona’s top junior players and nationally ranked competitors (ages 13–18) competing for one of the most prized titles on the Junior Golf Association of Arizona (JGAA) schedule of tournaments.

“Everybody associates The Thunderbirds with the WM Phoenix Open, but most don’t know what they do for junior golf,” said JGAA Executive Director Scott McNevin. “They support this event financially and show up in person to help run it.”

In addition to supporting elite junior golfers, the group’s deep roots and lasting impact extends to LPGA*USGA Girls Golf – Phoenix, Youth on Course, and First Tee – Phoenix, all of which serve broad demographics.

Each year a couple hundred thousand kids learn life lessons through the game of golf due to Thunderbirds’ funding, which of course comes from the WM Phoenix Open. “The People’s Open” raised a record-breaking $18.1 million for local charities in 2025, and junior golfers were just one of many beneficiaries.

The mission of Thunderbirds Charities is to support organizations that assist children and families, help people in need and improve the quality of life in the Greater Phoenix Metropolitan Area. As The Thunderbirds demonstrate, golf is so much more than just a game. It’s a powerful vehicle for giving to all walks of life across the Valley of the Sun. Golf is good for everyone.
