In this episode of the “Golf is Good for Everyone” podcast, current PGA of America President, Don Rea, took time to sit down and talk about the many benefits the game of golf provides to Arizona’s local communities and the families who call them home.
Alone with obvious things like charitable, health and economic benefits, the former Major League Baseball umpire pinpointed arguably the most compelling difference between golf and sports like baseball: “If you fool the umpire, you’re a smart player.” In the game of golf, however, each player is their own umpire, assessing penalties on themselves even when nobody’s watching.
“If you swing and miss on the golf course, did it count? If the ball moves in the rough, did it count?” he asked. “We both know it does.”
Not only does golf impart a “sense of accomplishment” with every well-struck shot, but provides a sense of integrity, a sense of pride, no gimmies.” The game’s framework of honesty provides a blueprint for personal and societal prosperity.
