In the desert Southwest, few topics are more pressing than water conservation. Featuring the AAG’s water policy committee chairman, Rob Collins, this episode of the “Golf is Good for Everyone” podcast offers an expert’s view on this hot-button issue.
In it, Collins draws on 35 years of experience with golf in the desert to examine many areas of sound golf course operation, including why local golf courses overseed, and how each measures and applies water use. He discusses the practically that water expenses and playability both motivate superintendents to use less water. Collins cites the Groundwater Act of 1980 legislation, which “put Arizona way ahead of the other Colorado River basin states.” He also chronicles technology’s ever-increasing and powerful role for driving current and future efficiencies.
Finally, Collins wants the 90% of non-golfers who may drive by any of the local golf course to know that “golf course superintendents are residents also. We’re part of this community, and we take responsibility for that golf course. It’s important for the average person to know that we’re stewards. We take it really seriously; we’re well educated; and we’re committed to conservation.”
